Nurses and Midwives globally forms close to 70 % of the health workforce and their contributions to the development of the world has being very immense yet almost always neglected when it comes to recognition of their valuable contributions to good patient outcome. Your quest and passion for the sick is recognized and clearly seen in your dutifulness and love for professional development in tandem with best nursing practices globally. In this special edition, we say big congratulation to you sir, your good works has hit the limelight and we say ayekoo!!! My Guest is Mr. Gideon Asante : He completed his basic and secondary school education in the Ashanti
region at Ejisu and Juaben secondary school (JUASS) in 1998 and 2001 respectively.
After an injury in1997 and subsequent admission at KATH, he experienced the pivotal
roles nurses play in hospitals.This heightened his likeness for the nursing profession
although he had doubts about males being nurses.His love for the profession grew
stronger during secondary school after knowing men could be nurses.He moved on
to enroll at Tamale NursesTraining college after Senior High School and completed in 2009.
After four years of service at Tamale Teaching Hospital, Gideon continued his
professional development at the University for Development Studies (UDS) and
graduated with second class upper due to his zeal and passion to be among the best
and serve where he is needed most. With a passion for cancer care and its management
being a global challenge, he embraced the odds, leading to him seeking higher
education as a resident of Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM) in pursuit of
being an Oncology nurse specialist. Are you fulfilled as a Nurse?
To say am fulfilled is to say problems confronting nursing has ceased to exist.
Globalization and proliferation of the internet has made health information accessible and
influenced health seeking behaviour of society ,hence the need to seek continuous
specialised professional development to meet the demands of patients at GCNM.
Achievement : Gideon believes in the saying that,“success is not measured by the
amount of dollars you make, but the amount of lives you impact”. His focus has being to
be the voice that always advocates for clients and their relatives, make them have a
positive outlook of the nursing profession whilst demystifying certain prejudices they
hold. He is gratified based on the feedback received from clients and their relatives as
well as colleagues at work.
Any contribution made : Though relatively young in the profession, he found himself in privileged
positions and did not fail utilizing his knowledge positively in contributing to the
profession.He helped in the establishment of the Accident and Emergency center of the
tamale teaching hospital, mentored and invigilated upcoming nurses during licencial
exams on many occasions.
Leadership positions: Positions he held in the past and current include but not limited
to the following:
President of Ghana Methodist students’ union (GHAMSU), JUASS,2000-2001
House prefect, JUASS,2000-2001
Electoral commission chairperson, Tamale nurses’ training college,2008-2009
Southern students’ president, Tamale nurses’ training college,2008-2009
Cohort rep for 2017/2018 year group, GCNM
Course rep for the oncology faculty for 2017/2018 year group, GCNM
Achievement in life: Being in the residency program at Ghana college of nurses and
Midwives (GCNM) serves as a great start to his professional achievement.
Are the efforts of Nurses recognized? Nurses play a pivotal role in our health care delivery
system, but comparatively do not get the recognition they deserve, instead nursing has
been in a state of lampoonery.
What is the greatest challenge you see in Nursing today? The training and proliferations of low caliber nurses as they do not
appreciate the concept of professional nursing.The way forward is that training and
certification of nurses should start from first degree.
Advice: His advice to young nurses is to strictly adhere to the professional ethics of
nursing and also embrace continuous professional development.
