CONGRATULATION DR. ADJOA AWUKU AS OUR NEXT HEALTH HEROE!!!
She went to Aburi Girls and completed in 1994. She proceeded to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology ( KNUST) from 1996 - 2003 where she persued a course in Optometry ( Eye specialist Doctor). She has worked in Mission Clinic in Accra . By dint of hard work and meticulous leadership coupled with her passion to serve humanity she had Government of Ghana contract for 8 years for DVLA at Weija, Accra. She has also worked in First Rivers hospital in Nigeria from 2009 - 2010, then Calvary Eye Clinic for 1 year, also in Nigeria. She returned back to Ghana, her beloved country to serve her populace because of her passion and love for mother Ghana. She was absorbed into the Ghana Health Service in 2013 and her first station was at Sampa in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. She worked at Sampa Government hospital till 2015. In November 2015, she was reassigned to the Abesim Health Centre where she works currently as the eye specialist Doctor ( Optometrist) till date.
Why did you choose to become an eye doctor? My decision was fueled by my passion for humanity and the desire to help people see, since vision is a very important aspect of humanity in life. Are you fulfilled as a doctor? I am very much fulfilled seeing my clients having their sights restored or helping others manage their eye problem for life where Restoration is not humanly possible. Dr. Awuku has also worked with the Lion Club International , Special Olympic International all for period of 5 years because of her dynamic and skills in her profession. Her quest for knowledge and desire to learn more for the sake of her clients and personal satisfaction made her to have experience in delivery which she can conduct with ease in case of any emergency where there is no a midwife. These special skills makes her a very resourceful professional in the medical fraternity. Dr. Awuku is a Team Leader and a human resource management expert aside her profession as a doctor. She knows the dynamic abilities and skills that her team brings to bear on the work, harnesses that potential for greater output and good health outcome. She has being an outreach coordinator in every station she works at, plans and implement outreaches to the rurual communities with the support from few others and her own resources . Professionals like her kind are very few and ought to be celebrated and honoured to serve as an inspiration to the younger professionals sprouting in our country and sub region. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about giving to others: my knowledge, time and money for the support of God's Kingdom and humanity.
What do you see as the greatest challenge in the health sector today?
√ Knowledge Gap
√ The love of money above human life
√ Health professionals not investing in themselves ( human resource Development)
√ Limiting oneself to only one area of knowledge.
Your advice to health professionals and all reading your story? We should learn to be humble, respect each other, time consciousness, decent professional appearance ( dressing), love of humanity above money, Management should also listen well in time of issues before taking actions using the appropriate medium of conflict resolution. Do you think we celebrate Health Heroes in Ghana? No
What is the way forward? We must rise to the occasion to change the narrative, lets celebrate genuine people whiles they live, celebration is part of life.
Family Life & Appreciation:
Am happily married to Iheriohanma and with three kids. She grew up in the Action Chapel International and has served in the office of the Archbishop before coming to Brong Ahafo, she now fellowships with the Glad Tidings Assemblies of God Church, Sunyani. I would want to thank Bishop James Saah ( Senior Bishop & president of the College of bishops- Action Chapel International), Bishop Nyarko ( Action Chapel International), Prof. Boakye - KNUST, Dr. Prempeh ( Adontehene of Otumfour), Dr. Been Kumah ( KNUST, Optometry department), Hon.Joe Osei Wusu ( 1St deputy speaker of parliament, Ghana), Director of Health Service Training institutions for Ghana - Dr. Asabere, Dr. Kofi Isah - Director of Health Services - Brong Ahafo region of Ghana.
For us to have a good health outcome and promote good virtues and behaviour across all sectors of the economy, am of the view that we must celebrate and honour our hardworking professionals. This becomes a great inspiration and incentive for good professional behaviour as well as good health outcome. This project started a year ago and the results and the feedback has being very amazing, our mega and maiden HEROES award is coming on this year NOV/DEC. We can not always be chastising the bad nuts within the profession, it is time to project and celebrate honest and hard working health professionals in our country Ghana, in that lies accelerated and sustainable development.
