The Sunyani Teaching Hospital has been lauded for reduction in maternal mortality from 9 to 3 in the year 2022 and 2023 respectively. This came to light during the 2023 annual review of the hospital which started yesterday 17th April, 2024 and will be ending on the 18th April, 2024. The goal of every pregnant woman visiting the hospital is to ensure they come out safely with their babies, hence efforts to ensure this must be well coordinated. To save one life is not a mere achievement in health since every life count, and for the Obstetric and Gynaecology Depart to work tirelessly towards this is worth celebrating. Again, there was reduction of still birth from 81 to 58 in the year 2022 and 2023 respectively. No surgical site infection was recorded as well at the Mother and Baby Unit.
This success was achieved through the collaborative efforts of the Head of Department, Dr. Kwadwo Adai Darko( Gynaecologist) and the three other Specialist at the Department, the Supervisor, Ms.Esther Addai and her able Midwives, Anaesthetist and all staff who worked in teams. Management provided the needed logistical support throughout the year under review. This is a remarkable feat for the Sunyani Teaching hosital as it arrives for excellence tertiary service to it's clients. The head of department and the supervisor is urging all staff to continue to give out their best as they arrive for zero maternal mortality.
Attendance at ANC and Postnatal were seen to have a steady decline. The department has been tasked to conduct a scientific research on the decline and make appropriate recommendation to management for consideration.
