OBESITY

Obesity is usually defined as the overabundance of body fat, resulting in body weight 20%-30% over the average weight for the person’s age, height, sex and body frame.
CONTRIBUTING FACTORS MAY INCLUDE:
• Heredity
• Social pressure
• Psychological responses to stress
• Decrease exercise level
• Hormonal imbalance
• Overeating with little exercise.
Obesity is usually common among the middle age, women are more prone to obesity than men, occurs in both infants and adults at all ages.
Obesity can be determined using weight and height measurements, body frame size, skinfold measurement and triceps skin fold measurement. In this literature, we will be focusing on determining Obesity using weight and height measurements.
HOW TO CALCULATE BODY MASS INDEX (BMI)
BMI is your weight (in kilograms) over your height squared (in centimeters).
• BMI less than 18.5 is under weight
• BMI from 18.5 to 24.5 is normal
• BMI from 25 to 29.9 is over weight
• BMI greater than 30 is Obese

MANAGEMENT
1. Decrease daily food intake whiles increasing activity levels.
2. Provision of a balanced, low –calorie diet, containing few if any food high in fats and sugars.
3. Teaching long- term mordification of eating habits.
4. Weight monitoring.
5. Regular check-ups to monitor cholesterol level in the blood.
6. Checking electrolytes in the blood.

COMPLICATION
1. Sudden death from cardiac dysrhythmias related to electrolyte imbalance.
2. Diabetes Mellitus
3. Osteoarthritis
4. Respiratory disorders
5. Back pain and musculoskeletal pain
6. Liver disease.
7. Vitamin and nutrient dificiencies.
